An eighth-century English Benedictine monk who became the Apostle of Germany, evangelizing the Germanic peoples and organizing the Church in what is now Germany. He famously felled the sacred oak tree of Thor at Geismar without divine retribution, dramatically demonstrating the powerlessness of pagan gods. He was martyred in Frisia in 754.
