The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed — a day of prayer for all souls in purgatory, established by St. Odilo of Cluny in 998 AD and extended to the universal Church. Every priest may celebrate three Masses on this day. The Church's practice of praying for the dead is rooted in the doctrine of Purgatory and the communion of saints.
Why it matters for your parish:One of the most pastorally significant days of the liturgical year — every parishioner has lost someone. Memorial Masses on this day draw many who rarely attend.
