A fourth-century Roman soldier who, before his conversion, cut his military cloak in half to share with a freezing beggar — that night he dreamed of Christ wearing the cloak. He became one of the great bishops of Gaul and founded the first monastery in France. He is the patron saint of soldiers, the poor, and France.
Why it matters for your parish:The story of the cloak is one of the most recognizable acts of charity in Christian history. Veterans Day on November 11 coincides with his feast, making the soldier-saint content especially timely for American parishes.
