A fourth-century Sicilian martyr whose name means "light" in Latin. Her feast falls near the winter solstice — the darkest days of the year — making her the saint of light. In Scandinavia her feast is celebrated with candlelit processions of girls in white robes. She is the patron saint of the blind.
Why it matters for your parish:A martyr of light in the darkest time of year — her feast falls at the perfect Advent moment of waiting for the Light of Christ. The Scandinavian celebration is one of the most beautiful devotional practices connected to any saint.
