Two of the greatest theologians of the fourth century, Basil and Gregory were close friends who together shaped the doctrine of the Holy Trinity against the Arian heresy. Basil founded Christian monasticism in the East and organized care for the poor on an unprecedented scale. Gregory's eloquent preaching earned him the title "the Theologian." Both are Doctors of the Church.
