Twenty-six Catholics — six Franciscan missionaries from Europe and twenty Japanese converts including teenagers — crucified in Nagasaki, Japan in 1597. Paul Miki, a Japanese Jesuit, preached from his cross as he died. Their courage inspired rather than suppressed Christianity in Japan. They are the first martyrs of Japan.
Why it matters for your parish:A compelling missionary martyrdom that transcends cultures — the witness of Japanese converts alongside European missionaries shows the universal reach of the Church. Excellent multicultural content.
