A thirteenth-century German Dominican bishop and Doctor of the Church known as "Universal Doctor" for his encyclopedic knowledge spanning philosophy, theology, natural science, biology, geography, and astronomy. He was the teacher of Thomas Aquinas and did more than any other medieval thinker to integrate Aristotelian philosophy into Christian theology. He is the patron saint of natural scientists.
