August 28

St. Augustine of Hippo

A fourth-century North African bishop and Doctor of the Church whose Confessions and City of God are among the most influential books in Western history. Augustine spent his youth in moral recklessness before his conversion at thirty-two, praying: "Lord, make me chaste — but not yet." He is the patron saint of brewers and theologians.

Why it matters for your parish: One of the greatest intellects in Church history and one of the most relatable — his Confessions speak directly to the modern spiritual seeker. "Our heart is restless until it rests in you" is one of the most quoted lines in Christian writing.
