An eighth-century English Benedictine monk who spent his entire life at the monastery of Jarrow and became the first great historian of the English Church. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People is the primary source for early English Christianity. He popularized the BC/AD dating system and is the only Englishman named a Doctor of the Church.
