A sixteenth-century Portuguese-Spanish layman who spent his early life as a soldier before a conversion at age forty led him to care for the sick and poor in Granada. He founded what became the Brothers Hospitallers and personally carried the sick through city streets. He is the patron saint of the sick, hospitals, and nurses.
