A Roman soldier and martyr shot with arrows by order of Emperor Diocletian around 288 AD, nursed back to health, and then clubbed to death when he confronted the emperor again. One of the most depicted saints in Western art, his image of calm endurance under suffering has made him an enduring symbol of Christian courage. He is the patron saint of athletes.
Why it matters for your parish:One of the most recognizable martyr images in Catholic art — high visual and cultural resonance. Great for parishes with athletic programs or those reflecting on suffering and courage.
