Two English martyrs executed by King Henry VIII in 1535 for refusing to accept the Act of Supremacy. John Fisher was the Bishop of Rochester and the only English bishop who refused. Thomas More was Henry's Lord Chancellor — the most powerful layman in England — who could not in conscience deny the pope's authority. Both died with characteristic wit and courage.
Why it matters for your parish:Two of the most compelling martyrs in English-speaking Catholicism. Fisher's episcopal fidelity and More's famous humor are enduringly powerful. Essential content for parishes reflecting on conscience and authority.
