August 15

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The dogmatic teaching that at the end of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory — defined infallibly by Pope Pius XII in 1950. The oldest Marian feast in the Western Church. In the United States it is a Holy Day of Obligation.

Why it matters for your parish: A Solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation — the most important Marian feast of the year and a major attendance event. Essential content for August, touching on the dignity of the human body and the hope of resurrection.
