December 8

The Immaculate Conception

A Solemnity celebrating the dogmatic teaching that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin — preserved by God in anticipation of Christ's redemption. Defined infallibly by Pope Pius IX in 1854. In the United States it is a Holy Day of Obligation and the Patronal Feast of the nation. Four years later, Mary confirmed the dogma to Bernadette at Lourdes.

Why it matters for your parish: A Solemnity, Holy Day of Obligation, and Patronal Feast of the United States — one of the most important feast days of the entire year for American Catholics. Essential December content.
